About this collection

The first Sisters of Providence came to the American West from Montreal in 1852 to serve in what was then known as the Diocese of Nisqually, but their mission was cut short due to lack of preparation and support. On their way home by ship to Quebec, they stopped in Valparaiso, Chile, and remained to serve orphans and others in need. Their ministry resulted in the establishment of Bernard Morin Province in 1853.
